This is an app that allows for updates and installing information on the phone.
Google Play Services is responsible for more than just allowing you to search through the apps that are available to download. You can search for everything from books to games to play on the phone. It also updates all of the apps that you have installed, even those that you don't use on a regular basis. There is a way to force an app to stop working or disable it completely. You can uninstall an app if you want to free up space on the phone.
A benefit of Google Play Services is that you can see exactly how much space is being used with each app that you have. Authentication is provided to ensure that you are getting the correct information from the apps that you install. Searches are enhanced with increased speeds. Google Play Services also uses your location to offer some of the information from apps that you use. Your games are improved as well as the maps that you view. Game services are available along with music and mobile ads. You can search for almost anything that can be used on your phone with Google Play Services so that you don't have to go online to find websites. Even if you think it's a waste of space, it's really a benefit as it allows you to install the apps that you want to use.

Google Play Services runs in the background on most Android smartphones and tablets. If a device features Google apps, then the Play Services app is installed. Device owners won't interact with this particular app as it runs in the background. App crashes and bugs may occur when something goes wrong with the background processes, though. Still, Android devices run much better with this service running.
First and foremost, Google Play Services authenticates a given user (and device) with Google's servers. Most Google apps will not run without this background app. It even handles contact synchronization and improves location-based services. Likewise, Play Services ensures that many apps, both Google and non-Google, run without issue. The app even improves the experience when no data or Internet connection is available.
Most people never notice Google Play Services on their Android device until something goes wrong. They'll see a warning that Play Services has stopped working. At that point, whatever apps are affected will cease running immediately. Most users find this frustrating, and the only fix involves restarting a given app. When the background process starts to act up, major battery drain can result.
Battery drain results from syncing issues and GPS refreshing, among other things. For some users, this could mean that a device dies within an hour. Then again, Google Play Services runs properly for most users, and infrequent issues can be remedied with a device restart. Few Android device owners would want to experience Android OS without the improvements and features brought by Google Play Services.
